This twisted, carnival-esque story has just released its fourth issue and sticking with the theme, everything is cryptic and everything is just…a laugh.

The Batman Who Laughs brings Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne’s own authenticity to the forefront. Wayne must face his demons in order to try to stop what is clouding his vision and his faithful butler Alfred will do whatever he can to bring the boy her raised back, even if a few fists must be thrown. And even though he is dealing with frankly a lot, he does manage to get a hold of himself and sets off on doing what he must to stop the Batman who laughs.

We are also brought back to Jim and the conundrum that he is in, as he is with the Joker and Batman who laughs. The entire comic issue is dark and intense, with so many factors swirling in and not truly knowing who is going to be at the breaking. Not knowing if the city is going to be thrown into the darkness that only the Joker can truly bring upon them and isn’t that what he has wanted all along?

There’s actually an eerily beautiful panel between the Joker and the other version of Batman that sent chills up my spine and we are reminded not only about how disturbed this series is, but also that Batman and the Joker, no matter what version of both; are always two sides of a coin. And that one can never truly exist without the other.

Bruce Wayne is on his own mission, but in Gotham, where you have the Batman who laughs, it’s hard for Batman to exist without that stigma now that he is dangerous himself. The end of the panel is shocking and a cliffhanger that will explode in the next issue. You really need to pick up this issue and enjoy how much the story has thrown itself into insanity and a new spin on Batman that you most likely never saw coming.
