Different Ending for Xandar Was Originally Planned in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War released digitally earlier today, and with it over four additional hours of extras. One of those extras is an exclusive director commentary in which the Russo brothers explain why they did what they did in the movie. One of the big points of dispute between fans was the handling of Thanos acquiring the Power Stone and why Xandar wasn’t shown in the film. Well, originally, that wasn’t the plan.

According to writer Christopher Markus the team “wrote a version of Thanos attacking Xandar and it had a similar purpose in the script to what Knowhere does now. It was a place where Thanos and Gamora encountered each other but the fact of the matter is you know exactly what happens. If Thanos went to Xandar to get that stone, you know what happened. It was a big battle and he got it.”

Director Joe Russo repeated the same sentiment saying  “It was an attempt to not be repetitive. We decided to cut it from the script, and as you said, start in the middle of the story.”

It can be assumed that if we had gotten this version, with Thanos attacking Xandar on screen, that the scene with the Collector on Knowhere would have been cut. I envision Thanos arriving on Xandar, with Ebony Maw proclaiming his arrival similar to how he did on Thor’s ship, and then the Guardians arriving to try to save the day, which is when Thanos would take Gamora like he did on Knowhere.

However, Infinity War is my second favorite movie of all time and I wouldn’t change one thing about it. What about you though? Would you prefer to have seen Thanos decimate Xandar instead of the scene on Knowhere? Let us know in the comments below!
