Animated characters sail on an ocean. A girl swings on a rope while a man holds a staff. A pig stands nearby on the boat. The backdrop features a sunset and island peaks.

Disney Plus subscribers can now set sail with Moana 2, the record-breaking animated sequel that has taken the world by storm, as it begins streaming on March 19, 2025. After a triumphant theatrical run that saw it gross over $1 billion globally, this vibrant follow-up to the 2016 classic is now available to watch at home, bringing its Polynesian-inspired adventure, unforgettable music, and stunning visuals to the platform.

Moana 2 reunites audiences with the fearless wayfinder Moana, voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho, as she ventures into uncharted waters on a daring new quest across the Pacific. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns as the boisterous demigod Maui, joined by a lively crew of new characters. Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, the film features a fresh soundtrack from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, earning praise for its emotional depth and visual splendor. Geek Vibes Nation hailed it as “a visually stunning and emotionally resonant continuation of Moana’s journey” in their review, reflecting its strong reception among critics and fans alike.

The film’s theatrical journey, which began on November 27, 2024, was nothing short of monumental. Moana 2 debuted with a record-shattering $225 million domestically over its five-day Thanksgiving weekend, eclipsing Frozen II’s previous high of $125 million and claiming the title of the biggest Thanksgiving opening ever. Globally, it launched with $389 million, setting a new benchmark for animated films. By January 19, 2025, it had crossed the $1 billion threshold, with $445 million from the domestic box office and $567 million internationally, per Variety. As of March 19, 2025, its worldwide total stands at approximately $1.059 billion, according to posts on X and earlier reports, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2024 behind Inside Out 2 ($1.7 billion) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3 billion). This milestone marks it as only the fourth Walt Disney Animation Studios film to reach $1 billion, joining Zootopia, Frozen, and Frozen II.

MAUI RETURNS TO THE BIG SCREEN – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ all-new feature film “Moana 2” reunites Moana with Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an expansive new voyage to the far seas of Oceania. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, “Moana 2” features music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa‘i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. The all-new feature film opens in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024. © 2024 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Originally conceived as a Disney+ series, Moana 2’s pivot to theaters proved a masterstroke, doubling the original Moana’s $687 million haul and cementing its status as a cultural and commercial juggernaut. Its box office dominance persisted despite competition from heavyweights like Wicked, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Disney’s own Mufasa: The Lion King, holding a top-five spot domestically for weeks. Now, its arrival on Disney Plus offers subscribers a chance to relive the adventure—or discover it for the first time—without the need for theater tickets.

The sequel deepens the legacy of its predecessor with a rich exploration of Polynesian heritage, introducing new mythical creatures and a narrative that celebrates resilience and community. Whether you’re drawn by the infectious songs, the lush animation, or Moana’s inspiring journey, Moana 2 is set to become a streaming staple. For more on why it’s made such a splash, dive into Geek Vibes Nation’s full review. So grab your paddle, gather your crew, and stream Moana 2 on Disney Plus today—it’s a billion-dollar voyage worth taking!
