‘Dollface’ Season 2 Review: ‘Facing 30 has never been better, Doll’

The tribulations of turning 30 can fill a whole TV season and more. The end of your 20’s and the beginning of a sort of adulthood looms. Facing that sudden realization of a new era of your life suddenly can be met with that comedy drama that the second season of the Hulu show, Dollface, truly captures.

Dollface Season 2 Hulu

I turn 30 in two days so essentially I felt like Dollface season 2 was sort of tailor made for me. The series focuses back on Jules Wiley, played masterfully by Kat Dennings, as she navigates the end of her 20’s and the possibility that she can change her life. Her best friends, Madison (played by Brenda Song), Izzy (Esther Povitsky) and Stella (Shay Mitchell) also are in the midst of carving their own path within their lives. Each girl in the friend group is taking on a major decision with their career, their love life and life post pandemic. But no matter what happens they all come together to support one another, even if sometimes that includes dream board shenanigans.

This storyline sounds like a cliche series but Dollface‘s comedic way of self introspection really sets it apart from any other show I’ve seen. Through the series Jules is trailed by a voice in her head who manifests itself as a literal Cat Lady on screen. The Cat Lady takes Jules through movie style little introspections of her situations with comedy angles. It’s hard to describe but it’s an amazing way to see regular life problems portrayed in a grandiose whimsical way.

Dollface Season 2 captures what it’s truly like to be in the crosshairs of 20 to 30. Having a great group of women around you is swell but it’s a breath of fresh air to see each person within the the main character group also be battling their own demons. The pairing of realism and wild imaginative whimsy within the series makes facing internal battles seem a little bit more manageable when you’re watching it on screen. Yes, the show might not be for everyone but it hit home with me. Now maybe I don’t see a literal Cat Lady but sometimes I feel like my imagination makes me feel like a Dollface side character who didn’t get a spinoff.

Not only is the style of comedy refreshing and new, the acting is great. I loved each character on the show, especially Izzy, played by Ester Povitsky. She has her own story arc when she starts dating a boy who she thinks is way out of her league (only to realize life is not what others think but what you feel for someone). Every character has those unrealistic lives, perfect apartment and superb skin, but they all face battles in a way that made me relate to every situation oddly enough.

Sometimes entertainment is an escape from our own lives. It’s nice to fall into another world and let it take you away. Dollface once again did an incredible job of pairing that escapism with the true feelings myself and my friends are currently facing (even if our apartments aren’t huge and seemingly rent free). My own current life experiences pair with seasons 2 to the point I swear Jordan Weiss, the creator of the show, has been reading my diary. It was an introspective great binge for anyone looking for a feel good series.

Final Thoughts?

Dollface once again was the perfect series I didn’t know I needed. The 30 minutes or less episodes make this entire season an easy weekend pillow fort viewing extravaganza. All episodes are now streaming on Hulu for you to get face to face with doll.
