With the new Scream 5 starting to get some buzz lately, it seems even Drew Barrymore has the famous franchise on her mind. Specifically her very famous death scene in the opening of the original.
During a recent visit on Hot Ones, she remarked how killing off the character of Casey Becker was not only a huge twist, but it was also her idea.
“In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was always going to be slugging through at the end but was going to creak by and make it,” Barrymore explained. “What I wanted to do is to take that comfort zone away. I asked if I could be Casey Becker so that we would establish that rule does not apply in this film.”
Despite Casey not making it through the first few minutes, there are surprisingly a handful of characters that have managed to make it all the way through. Two are already confirmed to be returning for Scream 5, Courtney Cox and David Arquette, with hopefully more on the way as production moves forward.
While we hope many familiar faces make a return, this will be the first film in the franchise to not have the late Wes Craven in the big chair. In his place will be Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who have already proven themselves more than capable.
Scream 5 is set to appear in theaters in 2021. Hope to see you there! You can also check out the Hot Ones episode by clicking their name above.

I’ve worked my whole life to become a comic book illustrator, writer, and stand-up comedian. Batman and Captain Benjamin Sisko helped put a good head on my shoulders. I spent most of my childhood saving Hyrule and the Mushroom Kingdom and seeing the Justice League save all of creation time and time again. I live in Johnson City, TN with my wife Kary and daughter Laila enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and occasional show. Three puppies round out the family and take up the rest of the time that isn’t spent debating which Wes Anderson or Studio Ghibli movie to watch. I spend an inordinate amount of time binge watching SVU, Futurama, and Letterkenny, and when I’m not watching I’m listening to “My Brother, My Brother, and Me” or playing the occasional game of D&D. If there’s a nerdy endeavor out there, I’ve probably at least tried it.
