Hollywood, California is preparing for a special treat as Director GB Hajim’s latest film, “Mermaid’s Lament,” is set to captivate audiences at the Dances With Films film festival on June 25. This poignant cinematic masterpiece explores the themes of resilience, trauma, and imagination, taking viewers on an emotional journey that will leave a lasting impact.

“Mermaid’s Lament” tells the compelling story of two women, Oee and Dr. Nell Jamison, who discover strength and solace in each other despite their personal struggles. Oee, brilliantly portrayed by Dayva Summer Escobar, is a traumatized woman who has lost her voice and is caught between the realms of reality and fantasy, wondering if she might be a mermaid. Dr. Nell Jamison, played by the talented Justina Mattos, is a therapist battling her own anxieties while endeavoring to guide Oee through her delusions and help her reconnect with the world. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the transformative power of imagination.

GB Hajim, a visionary director with a deep commitment to the Hawaiian Renaissance, brings his extensive experience and passion for storytelling to “Mermaid’s Lament.” With over 25 years of producing Hawaiian language dramas, animations, documentaries, podcasts, and educational programs, GB Hajim has become a prominent figure in multimedia production. This film marks his second feature, following the success of his self-produced 2D animated sci-fi lesbian musical, “Strange Frame” (2013), which boasted an exceptional cast including Claudia Black, Cree Summer, Tim Curry, George Takei, and Academy Award winner Gary Rizzo for sound, with music contributions from Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.

With “Mermaid’s Lament,” GB Hajim intertwines his love for the ocean and his dedication to storytelling. The film beautifully explores the profound connection between resilience, imagination, and human connection. Drawing inspiration from the vastness and strength of the ocean, the characters in the movie learn to navigate the chaos of their lives, discovering the transformative power of imagination in the process.

GB Hajim’s diverse pursuits extend beyond the world of filmmaking. When he is not crafting engaging narratives on the big screen, he devotes his time to working with the Hawaiian community, writing captivating screenplays, indulging in freediving, and pursuing his passion for farming. This multifaceted approach to life enriches his storytelling, infusing his work with authenticity, depth, and resonance.

Prepare to be moved by the heartfelt and moving story of “Mermaid’s Lament.” This thought-provoking film invites audiences to explore the unyielding power of the human spirit and the importance of embracing imagination and human connection, even in the face of adversity. Mark your calendars for June 25th at 9:30 pm and join the screening of “Mermaid’s Lament” at the prestigious TCL Chinese Theater, where you will be immersed in a world of resilience, trauma, and the boundless possibilities of the human imagination. Dances with Films promises an unforgettable experience, and “Mermaid’s Lament” is sure to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all who witness its captivating story.
