Fan-Casting Jon Bernthal as Wolverine in the MCU

Let me start out by saying, no one is more heartbroken over the cancelation of The Punisher than I am. For me, there is no one else better suited and who did a better job playing Frank Castle than Jon Bernthal himself. I still hold out the hope that one day, we can see such actors as Bernthal and Charlie Cox regain the chance to portray the characters that they succeeded so well in and brought to the masses. Hulu, if you’re listening, please take on these wonderful shows whenever the embargo is lifted.

That being said, it is highly unlikely we’d ever see The Defenders in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the movies). The Punisher was certainly the most adult out of all the Netflix Marvel shows, with its extreme violence, excessive use of blood, and graphic sex scenes (hey, I’m not complaining). Again, if they found a way to incorporate these characters, I will be the last person complaining.

With the Disney and Fox deal complete, we know that we are going to see those Fox characters be brought into the MCU at some point in the future. That means the X-Men. We will see an entire recasting, save Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool; so, we have to wonder who is going to play some of the most iconic mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, why not establish The Defenders-verse as separate, since it was already established it wasn’t affected by the snap and there really wasn’t much connecting it to the movie-verse anyway, AND make Jon Bernthal the new Wolverine?

Hugh Jackman solidified this into the mainstream world and nothing will take away the almost two decades he spent playing the iconic character. But, even Jackman had stated he wouldn’t return to the character, because he was “too old” to play Wolverine. You know who is in great physical condition and used to no holds barred action? Jon friggin Bernthal.

Wolverine, in the comics; is a short man. Certainly not what we saw in the live-action sense, as Jackman is 6’2″. And none of us made a fuss, because Jackman was perfect. Just like, in the comics, The Punisher is quite tall (they even tried to fool us in The Punisher season two by saying Frank Castle was 6’4″) but, in reality; Bernthal is 5’11”. So, if anything, Bernthal is more qualified height-wise for this role.

On top of being in great physical condition, we know that Bernthal carries himself strongly. He adapts to whatever character he is playing and he has the perfect scowl that would go along perfectly with a world and time-worn Wolverine. Bernthal always seems to have a stacked schedule, but he’s been involved in both The Walking Dead and The Punisher, both comic-book based series. So, I think that if Bernthal were to hear the offer out, I think that Disney should consider this talented actor for when they bring Wolverine into the MCU.
