Fans Call for #BoycottMulan After Actresses Comments about Hong Kong Police

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”28235″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]Disney’s live-action Mulan has been subject to debate before. You have some who question why the movie is being made when they’re excluding the songs from the animated film as well as the character Mushu. Others say that this film is attempting to be more historically accurate to the Mulan who existed in history, while others point out the historical inaccurate from the trailer. Now, the film is coming under another brand of fire in the form of the hashtag #BoycottMulan. Why? It stems back to the movie’s lead actress Liu Yifei and her recent comments posted online.

In case you haven’t been keeping an eye online, there are major protests going on in Hong Kong right now. Tensions are high between protesters and police, who have clashed several times over the past week. The situation at the Hong Kong airport became so volatile that flights, both outgoing and incoming; were canceled.

In a recent post on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, Yifei wrote:

“I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now.”

She continued,

“What a shame for Hong Kong” and “#Ialsosupporthongkongpolice#.”

The Hong Kong police have been accused of using excessive force against the protestors. While everything seems to be coming to a head this week, protests have been happening for four months since legislation announced they’d allow suspected criminals to be extradited to territories that do not have formal extradition deals. Since then, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has suspended the bill.

Since Yifei’s comments, people on social media have been calling out Yifei and using the hashtag #BoycottMulan.

One Twitter user has stated:

“#BoycottMulan because while these people in HK are fighting for their rights while being brutalized by their own police, Liu Yifei is sitting her happy ass down in the US enjoying the rights those people don’t have while supporting the police brutality from afar.”

Another expressed:

“I was happy when @DisneyStudios announce that they are making a new Mulan movie. She was my childhood hero. It is disappointed to see the actress who plays her does not empathize with the protesters in HK. They are fighting for their homeland like Mulan. #BoycottMulan”

Mulan is supposed to hit theaters March 27, 2020.
