As we step closer towards the fall, plenty of movies are set to be released within the next couple of months. While everyone can be excited about seeing some anticipated upcoming blockbusters, it seems that according to a survey by Atom Tickets that female moviegoers are most pumped for Aquaman, Venom, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. 10,000 women who describe themselves as “frequent moviegoers” made up this survey.
Aquaman and Venom are some of the most anticipated films coming out. For DC fans, Aquaman looks like a great change in what we’ve seen in the DCEU so far. Starring Jason Momoa, the movie is full of bright, beautiful colors and we’ll get to see Arthur Curry’s origin story, as well as him looking to find his place in Atlantis.
Venom is Sony’s upcoming project, which stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. As the film that will kick off the “Spiderverse”, a lot is riding on this film. Of course, Hardy is a fantastic actor and I have no doubt that he will deliver the best performance he can, but due to mix reactions to the trailers we’ve seen, I’ll wait before getting too excited for this film.
So, why is it that female moviegoers are most excited for these upcoming films? Could it be that women don’t just want to see movies like Legally Blonde or the next Notebook? I’m being facetious obviously, because a good film is a good film and the stigma that women won’t like something because it is “darker” is a little ludicrous. Jason Momoa and Tom Hardy are fantastic actors who are sure to give outstanding performances; why wouldn’t we want to go pay to be thoroughly entertained? And yes…doesn’t hurt that the leads are both eye-candy.
For those looking forward to Aquaman, we also have a strong female superhero on screen, which is Amber Heard’s Mera.
“She’s a leader. She has integrity,” Heard stated, “Her and Arthur are very different, in fact, that’s part of what causes a lot of, you know, they don’t necessarily fit at the beginning. They’re constantly going back and forth and they earn this relationship with one another throughout the film as they learn to respect each other, given their vastly different approaches to life. Mera, for instance, unlike Arthur, has a very solid constitution, a strong sense of self, who she is, what her role is, what her position is. And the sense of duty and honor that she uses to approach all of the situations of her life is one that I respect and really like, and I admire that.”
“Mera’s her own woman. She’s her own superhero,” Heard continued. “She’s not Aquawoman. She’s Mera. Part of what got me, you know when I first talked to Zack [Snyder] on the phone about the prospect of doing this film, he said, ‘She’s a warrior queen.’ Basically, you get a sword and a crown. And I was like, ‘Okay, you know how to pitch to your audience.’
Alright, ladies, how do you feel? Are you excited as I am for these films and to break the stigma?
Venom premieres October 10th and Aquaman December 21st.
