Filmmaker Wong Kar-wai to Produce a “Blossoms” Web Series Before Directing The Movie

Wong Kar-wai is one of the best filmmakers out there and if you don’t know his name, then that means you haven’t seen some of his best work. Movies such as In the Mood for Love, 2046, and Happy Together. While the filmmaker announced a project called Blossoms in March, there has been no further mention of a movie. Now, it seems that Kar-wai is instead tackling a web series first.

Variety reported that Kar-wai is working with one of the biggest Chinese production companies around, Tencent; on this new series. Blossoms is based on the 2012 novel from Jin Yucheng. The story is about a young entrepreneur who is in search of wealth and romance during the 1990s Shanghai economic boom. The filmmaker had previously expressed his personal ties to the novel because of it taking place in Shanghai.

Keep in mind that while a web series will be produced, Kar-wai has not abandoned his goal of adapting the novel into a movie. While Kar-wai looks to direct the movie, it looks like he will be producing the series.

There’s no further news of cast, director, or when the series may start filming, but here is a teaser poster in the meantime:
