Five Times Ward Meachum was Done with Everyone

Iron Fist season two is around the corner and while everyone is excited about the possibility of a new and improved Danny Rand, there is someone in Iron Fist that I am looking forward to being reunited with. Ward Meachum. You may remember him as the character in the first season who we all thought was a bit of a pretentious ass. After delving further into the show, we watch him become a heroin addict, and then learn about the dark secrets he has been forced to keep from his sister for years. As someone who just didn’t ask for anything that came his way, Tom Pelphrey’s rendition of this role is by far my favorite aspect about the show. I was heartbroken when all we got was a slight mention of his name in The Defenders; I’m ready for Ward back in Iron Fist season 2.

To prepare for the second season of Iron Fist, let’s reminisce over the top five times Ward Meachum was just DONE.

Ward Done with his Dad

Ward’s zombie daddy is not winning any awards of the year. We find out in the first episode that Harold has been alive, despite most people believing him to be dead for the better part of 15 years. This whole time, Ward has reluctantly been doing his bidding. Despite us clearly seeing how dangerous father Meachum is and his son knowing this, Ward can’t help, but show his snarkiness around his dad. After all, Harold’s ambition is sometimes too illogical and grandiose for his son, who simply wants to go about business as usual. He doesn’t want to talk about Danny Rand and the Hand, Harold, he just needs a damn spa day.

Ward Done with Danny

There are so many moments in Iron Fist that Ward was completely done with Danny Rand, but one of the best moments was in episode five, when Danny was attempting to explain the Hand to him. Ward laughing as Danny is telling him about the drugs that the Hand was transporting into the city was hilarious, as Ward explains that he has real work to get done. The unwanted journey that Danny strings his old friend on just provides truly hilarious moments where Ward probably wished he’d just stay in bed that day.

Ward Done with the Police

Ward has his faults. I think this is what makes him one of the most tangible characters in the Netflix MCU. He gets stressed out, doesn’t often say the nicest things, and has killed his father twice now. In season one, he also had a nasty drug habit most likely developed from the stress of dealing with his undead dad for all these years. After tossing away his medication due to trying to convince Joy he didn’t have an addiction, Ward slowly realizes that this was a very bad idea. Most medications cause withdrawal if not taken and we can see Ward not able to properly handle this. Ward then develops a heroin addiction and just as he’s heading to his car, the police stop him. Harold clearly had baggies of drugs planted in his car, causing the cops to thus arrest Ward.

Ward Done with Joy

For a majority of the first season, Ward and Joy had a very close relationship. Despite Ward’s usual standoffish personality, he was very warm and open with his sister. Still, even Joy couldn’t avoid Ward’s level of doneness. Especially when Joy started believing that the man who had infiltrated their lives was Danny Rand. When it was revealed to her that their father was indeed alive, Joy took Harold’s side and Ward couldn’t help, but show his done side when his sister insisted their resurrected dad had her best interests at heart. Now, it seems the two are not as close as they used to be, Joy bitter at their father’s official death and Ward aligning himself with Danny.

Ward Done with Everyone

In the end, there is no one that is safe from Ward’s level of doneness. He’s had a hard first season and hopefully, he took some much needed time off. I also am hopeful for more character development in the second season of the Iron Fist, because if those who run the show don’t realize that Tom Pelphrey is the best asset they have, well, then there is no hope for the show (I’m being dramatic here obviously).

Iron Fist returns September 7th to Netflix.
