What Shaped Gaal
Episode five starts [with a flashback] with Gaal witnessing what happens to knowledge preservers on her home planet of Synnax. This scene not only explains why it was necessary for Gaal to leave her home planet if she wished to pursue a life in science, but it shaped her understanding of others who repress knowledge.
I was quite happy to see Foundation returning to Gaal’s story – one I’ve missed since we last saw her in the first two episodes of the season. On top of seeing how the death of a knowledge-seeker affected her, we also got more of an insight into her home planet of Synnax. In addition, this episode revisited another character that we previously thought we had seen the last of. I won’t reveal who, as you really should check it out if you’re a fan of this compelling show.
Time Hopping
In general, I am not overly fond of shows and movies that hop around from the present to the past to the future. I am more of a fan of linear paths – or perhaps a flashback here and there. While I do not mind this in Foundation, as it is telling a colossal story, I hope it does not make the same mistake Westworld did. If you’ve seen HBO’s Westworld, you know what I’m talking about.

Still, I believe Foundation is doing well in telling their story – it’s clear they’ve taken great care in shaping these characters. While I’ve not read the books, I can hope that book fans are happy with the adaptation that Apple TV+ is doing. Visually, the show is as stunning as ever. I enjoyed the look of places like Synnax and believe that Foundation is doing a better job world-building than most Sci-Fi explorations that probably took inspiration from Foundation.
