Francis Ford Coppola chimes in on the value of Marvel films

Francis Ford Coppola talks MCU

So now another iconic film director has decided to chime in about the merits of the Marvel Universe films. This time it’s Francis Ford Coppola, the 80 year old director of such classics as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Apparently, he is in line with Martin Scorsese’s critique of the films. However, he goes even further.

Earlier this month, Marvel fans were taken aback about Scorsese’s comments. The director of such classics such as Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, described the Marvel universe films as more theme parks than cinema. Of course, this didn’t set too well with Marvel fans, who immediately took to social media, defending the virtues of the MCU.

“It’s dispicable…”

Coppola decided to add his opinion after receiving the prestigious Prix Lumiere in France. This award was given for his lifetime contribution to cinema. During an interview with journalists, Coppola told them that he agreed with his fellow director but said he didn’t go far enough.

When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema. We expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.

It goes without question that both Scorcese and Coppola are distinguished award winning directors and are certainly entitled to their opinions. That doesn’t mean that the Marvel fan base has to agree. And as we have already seen with Scorsese’s comments, they are not shy in expressing their opinions on the matter. So I would expect to be reading another round of rebuttals about the MCU’s merits. This will  might also what the possible motivations are for the two award winning directors aversion to the current comic book trend of films. One thing is for certain. You can’t argue with the monetary success of the films. Marvel and DC are riding those theme park movies to the vault. Can you say, “Ka- CHING!”
