Do you love the video game, Doom? Of course, you do. Moreover, you loved it so much a guy wrote a book about it. According to Deadline, the popular book, Masters of Doom(2003) by David Kushner is being adapted for television. Executive produced by James and Dave Franco under their production company, Ramona Films, USA Network has ordered a pilot. In short, the nonfiction page-turner delves into the rise to prominence and eventual fallout of John Carmack and John Romero. Together, the two founded id Software creating games such as Wolfenstein, Quake, and of course Doom. Games that changed pop culture and gaming forever.
Also, the show will potentially be an anthology series with Kushner’s book leading the way. Award-winning writer, Tom Bissell co-writer of the book, The Disaster Artist will write and executive produce. Additionally, writing for video games such as Gears of War 4, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Battlefield Hardline. Furthermore, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Jeremy Bell executive produce via The Gotham Group. Along with James Franco, Dave Franco, Vince Jolivette and Elizabeth Haggard of Ramona Films, and Kushner. D.J. Goldberg of The Gotham Group will serve as a co-executive producer. UCP is the studio.
As of now, no official air date or shooting window has been released. The plot reads as
the true story of two computer geniuses in an obscure corner of America who, along with a group of rebellious misfits, created one of the biggest franchise hits of the 90s, the video game Doom. John Carmack and John Romero were best friends who became bitter rivals, as they created a video game empire and transformed pop culture forever.
Without a doubt, it sounds very intriguing. I also greatly enjoy a well-done anthology series. Reportedly, it will be attached to USA Network’s “heroes, rebels, and icons” stable of stories that focus on big American characters. How big of a Doom fan are you? Are you looking forward to this? Let us know and we’ll keep you updated.
