‘Free Guy’ Director Talks on the Importance of Portraying Gaming in The Movie

Free Guy is doing really well at the box office, proving that Ryan Reynolds is already having a fruitful time with Disney. With Reynolds as the lead, comedic gold seems obvious. Free Guy stars Reynolds along with Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi. The movie follows along a character named Guy, played by Reynolds; who discovers he is actually the background player in an open-world game.

In a recent press conference, the actors and the director – Shawn Levy – spoke on the character, gaming, and some song choices.

When asked about what it’s like going from playing Deadpool to “Guy” in Free Guy, Reynolds responded:

“So, for this, it’s just slightly new for me. Um, I like, I sort of like that Guy is, you know, there’s movie that I love called Being There starring Peter Sellers. And that was, like, the first kind of, uh, uh, foothold I had into this character and this world. And, you know, there’s something really wonderful about playing a character who’s kind of naive and innocent, and really like, and I mean, it’s even said in the movie, he’s, in a sense, he’s kind of like a four-year-old adult.”

Reynolds continued:

“Um, so, there’s something, I think, really fun about exploring, you know, everything with new eyes, which is what this character gets to do, and sort of filtering that through the prism of, you know, comedy and occasionally cynicism, and all sorts of other things.”

Song Choice Decision

Director Shawn Levy talked about the song choice of Mariah Carey’s Fantasy:

“That was Ryan. Yeah, Ryan is kind of a maestro of the odd, random but inspired song idea. He is obsessive about it, and early on when we were working on the script, Ryan’s like, you know what I think should be the anthem of this entire movie and marketing campaign?”

The Importance of Gaming

Gaming is incredibly big right now and we have seen films before that have brought in a behind-the-scenes gaming aspect – some that have worked and some that haven’t. Levy was asked about the importance of portraying gaming in the right light:

“It was really, I mean, it was, this movie was about threading the needle between wanting to represent the gaming world correctly and accurately. And for that I spoke with a lot of game publishers, coders, game designers, um, and played and watched a lot of games, um, in preproduction. So, getting that right was really important. But it was also important to make a movie that required no gaming fluency from a viewer who wasn’t a gamer. And just wanting to make a movie that was warm and funny and romantic and, um, enjoyable as both.”

Levy continued:

“So, kind of trying to tick both boxes was always part of the goal, um, and-and something we worked really hard to achieve. By the way, circling back, there is a Taiki Waititi improvisation super cut. Literally, I cut, oh, I mean, I think it’s about 39 minutes long. I forced myself to cut it [OVERLAP] down to a minute and a half so that it could go on social media days ago. But, eventually, it’s, it must be shared with the world because it was a level of improv that I’ve rarely, rarely, rarely seen.”
