Movie nominations were revealed Tuesday for the 2021 Writers Guild Awards. Winners will be announced via virtual ceremony on March 21. Among the awards will be an outstanding achievement for adapted and original documentary and screenplays filmed during 2020.
The Adapted Screenplay category will be among Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, News of the World, One Night in Miami, The White Tiger, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
There is a race in the Original Screenplay category where we will see the writers behind Palm Springs, Promising Young Woman, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Sound of Metal all hoping for a win.
For the documentary side of things we have The Dissident, All In The Fight for Democracy, Herb Alpert Is…, Totally Under Control and Red Penguin all in the fight for the gold.
The eligibility period is for the WGA is January 1, 2020-February 28, 2021.
In order to be eligible, a movie had to have been produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement. The WGA is the only guild that is requiring that among this Covid Year. The awards-season favorites are Minari, Mank, Nomadland, The Father, Ammonite, Emma, The Personal History of David Copperfield, Let Them All Talk, Pieces of a Woman, and animated films including Disney’s Soul.
Not receiving a nod for Original Screenplay are Supernova, The Climb, The Assistant, Herself, I Carry You with Me, Ordinary Love, Farewell Amor. Not eligible for Adapted Screenplay are Hope Gap, Blithe Spirit, Martin Eden, Radioactive, and Penguin Bloom.
