One can bet that this season will be full of heartbreak and triumph, and plenty of amazing moments, as the cast has already made very clear. Sophie Turner, aka Sansa Stark, has gone on record saying that this season was the bloodiest and more heartbreaking of any other season, yes even season 3 (looking at you, Rains of Castermere). To be honest, nobody really knows what’s going to happen, and these predictions could all be horribly wrong, but I’m going to undertake the daunting task of giving each living, and reasonably notable, character’s chances of surviving, and make my case why they should or shouldn’t make it out alive. I chose probably the easiest one to start: Missandei.
Introduced in the season 3 premier, Missandei has done absolutely nothing but been loyal to Daenerys as she goes on her quest for the Iron Throne. We first meet her as the translator for the slave owners in Astapor, and quickly after she becomes the translator for Daenerys, after Daenerys frees her. With no family and nowhere to really go, she sticks with her queen and remains one of the only people to have never betrayed Daenerys’ trust. However, Missandei isn’t dumb. She doesn’t follow Dany into battle, and really, you could argue the closest she’s come to death is when she accompanied Daenerys to the Dragonpit in the season 7 finale. It also doesn’t hurt that she has the heart of the Unsullied army utterly in love with her; however, I give Grey Worm much higher odds of dying in season 8. Missandei isn’t a danger to anyone in Westeros, which is why I find it very hard to believe the show-runners will kill her off.
However, there is a chance she can die. There’s a chance anyone can die. It hard to deny the fact that Missandei is 100% expendable in this story. Daenerys can do everything she needs to without her companion, as Missandei has shown no talent of wielding a sword. Expendable really isn’t a good thing to be in this upcoming season. Missandei could very well be killed off to rally Daenerys or Grey Worm to re-focus on the goal at hand. She could also be killed defending Daenerys. We’ve already seen Daenerys be distracted at inconvienent times before (ie: Spoils of War), who’s to say it won’t happen again and instead of Drogon blowing fire to save the Dragon Queen, Missandei could jump in front of a spear to save her queen. But if I’m being honest here, the only scenario where I can see Missandei dying is maybe to sacrifice herself for Grey Worm, or possibly a causality of the battle against the Night King…a case that could be made for every character on this show.
I imagine season 8 will end for Missandei with her sitting alongside Daenerys or Jon as a very high member of their council, and possibly the Hand of the King, or Queen. I really just can’t see her dying, it’s not in line with what her story should be like. But then again, nobody though Robb Stark’s story should have ended in season 3, and it still did, so who really knows here? I would venture to say Missandei has some of the best odds at making it out of season 8 alive, and that’s why I’m putting her survival chance at 90%. A little high, sure, but I just think it doesn’t make sense to kill a character just for the shock of it, which is exactly what killing Missandei would be like.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
A few of my favorite things include my pet dragon (Drogon), Game of Thrones, Disney movies and theme parks, the MCU, DC movies, Star Wars, sports, and my rather large Funko Pop collection. Daenerys Targaryen is my queen, Robert Downey Jr is my man crush, and Simba is my spirit animal.
