Disney’s Soul is an Oscar-winning hit. Just as the story of Joe Gardner resonated with audiences, the character 22 also stood out. Which, is why Disney provided a prequel short 22 vs Earth. In the new short, which is out now on Disney+, you get to find out why 22 (played by Tina Fey) dislikes Earth so much.
I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with director Kevin Nolting, who has an expansive career as an editor at Pixar. One spanning a couple of decades. That why it was a privilege to get to participate in this roundtable discussion. Below is a transcript of my parts of this interview:
Hi, this is Tia from Geek Vibes Nation. First of all, I want to say huge congratulations for Soul’s wins. 22 vs Earth is such a great idea to explore 22, especially before the events of Soul. My question is, could we see more spinoffs from Soul or is this really just a contained story?
Nobody knows the answer to that yet, because the way it works with us at Pixar, these things just sort of come up organically as opposed to in any plan. And right now we have a lot of projects in production and development, and so something like this would just naturally not happen right away anyway. But yes, those conversations happen all the time, but right now there’s no specific plan.
Hey, Tia, again. Soul had a lot of emotions to it. You walked away feeling a lot from that. What would you say fans should expect walking away feeling after watching 22 versus the Earth.
If they’re feeling something I’m happy. I mean, I don’t have any grand, I don’t have any specific thoughts about what people should be feeling. I always approach these as if you’re walking away thinking about things, questioning things, then I’m very happy. I mean, I certainly have my own thoughts about what 22 is and how that relates to my life. Hopefully, it relates to other people too.
After such an amazing career over at Pixar. What was it about this story that made you want to get into the director’s seat?
Of the characters in Soul, in all our movies, 22 is probably the one I relate to most. I look at it as in Soul, there’s two kinds of people, there’s the Joe Gardeners of the world who know from an early age, what they’re going to do, and they sort of have this laser focus. They’re going to go do it. And then there’s the 22’s who don’t really know what they’re going to do and things happen and they follow along. And so, I’m more like 22, I guess. I can look back on my life now and say, oh yeah, there was a path. But when I was on the path, there was no path at all. So I think that’s where she’s at.
