Based on the short story by the famed author, H.P Lovecraft’s Witch House tells of a student, running from an abusive past, that seeks refuge in the infamous Hannah house; a historic home with an ominous past. Determined to prove the possibility of alternate dimensions, she unknowingly unlocks a gateway to unimaginable horror.
Award-winning actress Michelle Morris spoke to us about starring in one of the most anticipated new horror releases of the summer.
GVN: Frightening film! have you watched it with an audience?
Michelle: Yes, I have watched it with an audience, and it was a very exciting experience to hear their reactions and see their faces while it was playing! It was fun hearing their thoughts afterwards, too.
Let’s backtrack. When and how did the project come your way?
I was at a Days of the Dead horror convention in 2018, and Bobby Easley saw me swimming at the hotel. He approached me and asked me if I would be interested in auditioning for this film he was doing. I knew Bobby from previous conventions. I had watched a couple of his films and knew the potential he had, so I instantly was like, heck yeah! And as soon as he mentioned something about a witch, I was interested. I do not like auditioning though, and I’ll be the first to admit that I’m terrible at it. I was turned down, not once, but twice by the producers he was working with, but Bobby went with his gut, and told me I had the part. I was ecstatic!
And how can you relate to Alice?
When Alice focuses on something, like her studies, she really delves into it. I’m the same way. I love to research things in great detail, and I’m super-focused while doing so. I enjoy learning about some of the same subjects and the supernatural intrigues me, as well. I, like Alice, also have been in an abusive relationship in my past, that I escaped.
Did you read the original short story the film is based on?
I did not read it prior to being asked to be in the film, but I did read it once before we filmed. Bobby was adamant that I read it, so I did, and I’m glad that I did, because it gave me a better feel for what he was going for. I had never heard of H.P. Lovecraft before Bobby introduced me into his trippy world.
Tell us about Bobby. What does he bring to the project as a director?
He gets something in his head, and he makes it happen. He knows what he wants to see from each actor and helps bring that character out in them. He also brings drive and motivation to the set with his goofiness and fun attitude.
Was he open to suggestions?
Bobby was open to suggestions. Whether he went with the suggestion, or not, he was always appreciative.
If the film was playing as one half of a double feature at a drive-in theater – what would you suggest be the other movie they show with it?
Well, if they came out with a “Stranger Things” movie, rather than a series, Alice in Wonderland, or The Conjuring.
Have you a genre you’d like to work in, that you haven’t?
I would love to work on an investigative discovery series, and I think a Western film would be a lot of fun.
