George R.R. Martin Gives An Update on The ‘The Winds of Winter’

With the final season of Game of Thrones starting this Sunday, you might forget that this whole thing started with the series of Fire and Ice books written by George R.R. Martin. Starting with A Game of Thrones, which was followed by A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons. However, there was supposed to be a sixth book. The ever-elusive, seemingly never coming, The Winds of Winter. Recently, in conjunction with the upcoming climatic Season premier for HBO’s celebrated series, Martin was asked if he had an update on when “Winter was Coming.” His answer was consistent with his statements in the past, which was the, “it’ll be ready when it’s ready” kind of thing.

It’ll be done when it’s done. It’s been going very well lately, so, knock [on] wood.

At least he is working on the long awaited novel, so that is a good thing to fans of Martin’s written word. In addition, he was asked if there were any of his characters that he wished had made it to HBO’s Opus. He answered without hesitation:

Lady Stone-heart. Certainly the book I’m writing now [The Winds of Winter] it’s an important thread.

If you are like me and haven’t read Martin’s complete Fire and Ice novel series, Lady Stoneheart is actually the revived version of Catelyn Stark following the events of The Red Wedding. Lady Stoneheart can’t speak (having your throat slashed will do that to you) and has a burning hatred and desire for vengeance against all who wronged her and her family in life. She eventually becomes the brutal leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners. As Weiss and Benioff have done in the past, perhaps they have combined some of Lady Stone-Heart’s character traits into another character. That could be Arya, who has made it her goal to bring retribution upon those who have run afoul of the name Stark. Just a thought.

For those fans who have read Martin’s novels on which Game of Thrones is based, are you still waiting with baited breath for The Winds of Winter’s eventual release or have you moved on? As for the character of Lady Stone-Heart, do you feel this was an opportunity missed or are you satisfied with the work that was done on Game of Thrones? Share your insights with us at GVNation. But hurry, Winter starts in three days.
