When it comes to film, Guillermo del Toro has pretty much touched every kind of genre. Recently he was awarded for his efforts with his Oscar win for The Shape of Water. With that under his belt, Guillermo del Toro is now set to make his animated feature film directing debut. This comes in the form of Netflix giving him the green light to film Pinocchio. This will be a stop motion musical version of the classic tale about a puppet who wants to be a real live boy. In addition to his directing chores, del Toro will write and produce the film. He explained his motivations about wanting to work on Pinocchio during his announcement about the film:
No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.
The film will be set in Italy during the 1930s, during a particularly turbulent historical timeline. This places the film when fascism was on the rise and Benito Mussolini was consolidating his control of the country. It is a common theme of del Toro to use historical backdrops as settings for his films so it comes as no surprise that he chose to do so on this project. Production on “Pinocchio” is scheduled to begin this fall.
