A Brief Discussion with Writer Chad Corrie about his upcoming new series:

GVN: Thanks for sharing a bit of your time, Chad. You have written an adult fantasy series in the Wizard King Trilogy and a Graphic Novel in Sons of Ashgard: Ill Met in Elmgard. When did the idea start percolating for this YA book series and is there a difference in process for you when you write for the youth market as opposed to adults.

Chad: The idea for Sojourners’ Saga started about ten or so years ago. I was looking to try something different than what I had been writing (The Wizard King Trilogy and similar tales), which eventually led me to a sort of dystopian/apocalyptic tale for a change of pace.

Little did I know that it would prove to be one of the more challenging endeavors I’ve undertaken thus far, making me rework and rethink the story several times—even setting it aside for a couple years—before finally seeing the way forward. Ultimately, it ended up taking me in some different directions than what I was first envisioning but made for an interesting and entertaining tale overall.

As to writing YA vs. adult I found myself writing a similar story to what I would do with an adult tale in terms of plot and other things but had to always make sure it was being told through the two main younger protagonists. Their perspective flavored and informed what was said and shown and actually helped serve as the perfect guide into their respective worlds as they went about their lives and journeys. Having the younger POVs also helped showcase the adults in different ways that I think came off even more interesting than if I it was written from a purely adult POV.

GVN: As the Sparrow Flies: Sojourners’ Saga is Book 1. How many Books will this story encapsulate, and have you already mapped out the direction the saga will go?

Chad: Sojourners’ Saga is a three-part tale. At the time of this writing the plan is to have a book published every year, starting next May and then each May following. The entire series has already been written so there shouldn’t be any unforeseen issues on that front. So once things are locked into the process, we should be steady sailing all the way until book three’s release in 2026.

GVN: If this series is as well accepted as your previous books. Do you have plans to delve into more YA leaning titles?

Chad: Actually, I’m very curious to see how Sojourners’ Saga will be received. Having never published in the YA genre before I don’t know entirely what to expect—though I’m hopeful it finds its audience and then some in short order.

And I’m certainly open to exploring more YA projects. I’ve already written a YA comic book series and am presently working on a new YA title in another story universe, at the moment. So, we’ll see what the future holds on that front.

GVN: Thanks for chatting with us a bit, Chad. We look forward to the Sojourner’s Saga.
