We at GVN aim to keep you informed of the newest and best in home entertainment week in and week out. For the week of February 20th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get the full rundown of what you should have on your wishlist, plus take a chance to check out what Michael and I are spotlighting on The Video Attic this week.
This weeks finds the arrival of two awards season contenders on Blu-Ray. First up we have the powerful A24 drama The Inspection which finds writer-director Elegance Bratton exploring his real-life experience as a gay man in the military. The new Blu-Ray release from Lionsgate includes an audio commentary from Bratton along with an array of other featurettes and deleted scenes. Acclaimed director Sam Mendes returns with the poignant drama Empire of Light featuring newcomer Micheal Ward alongside a never-better Olivia Colman. This one was nominated for Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins at the Academy Award, so you will want to check this one out if you are an Oscar completist like us.
Speaking of the Academy Awards, current Best Actress nominee Michelle Yeoh can be found starring early in her career in the action-packed historical drama Magnificent Warriors newly out on Blu-Ray from 88 Films. This 1987 film finds Yeoh kicking some major butt, and this new release features a gorgeous restoration along with an array of special features such as interviews with Yeoh, an audio commentary and more.
This is not the only “magnificent” upgrade out this week, as Shout! Factory has released the classic western The Magnificent Seven newly restored from a 4K scan of the Original Camera Negative in Dolby Vision. The release features multiple commentary tracks and featurettes fans will not want to miss. If you are more in the mood for a modern western tale, Nicolas Cage finds himself on a path of vengeance in The Old Way out from Lionsgate. This release comes with a couple of audio commentary tracks and featurettes.
Also debuting this week on 4K UHD is the easy-going hangout classic Dazed and Confused from director Richard Linklater, which can now be found newly remastered on 4K UHD Blu-Ray courtesy of The Criterion Collection in Dolby Vision/HDR with a nice array of legacy special features.
This is only a taste of the incredibly packed lineup you have to look forward to you this week. Be sure to check out the full list below after checking out The Video Attic where we discuss the coming-of-age zombie comedy Warm Bodies on 4K UHD Blu-Ray SteelBook from Lionsgate, the classic Dustin Hoffman thriller Marathon Man on 4K UHD Blu-Ray, the Violent Streets: The Umberto Lenzi/Tomas Milian Collection from Severin, new releases from Mill Creek Entertainment, Raro Video and more.
