We at GVN aim to keep you informed of the newest and best in home entertainment week in and week out. For the week of June 6th, we have some incredible releases making their way to our shelves. Read on to get the full rundown of what you should have on your wishlist, plus take a chance to check out what Michael and I are spotlighting on The Video Attic this week.
One of the most exciting releases of the week is the arrival of The Northman from director Robert Eggers on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from Universal. Who doesn’t want to watch vikings leave a path of destruction on a quest for vengeance…but in an artistic way? The new release comes with an assortment of special features including an audio commentary track from Eggers.
If you want less subtlety and brain cells in your testosterone-fueled romps, there is a trio of action films that look somewhat interchangeable but might be some mindless fun. The most notable among these is The Contractor starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster out on 4K UHD Blu-Ray from Paramount. This one at least made it to theaters, which cannot be said for the other two debuts. Fortress: Sniper’s Eye is apparently a sequel to another direct-to-video film that finds Bruce Willis being exploited for one of his final times. Eraser: Reborn attempts to reboot the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film without the Austrian superstar. Check out this week’s Video Attic below to see if the attempt was successful.
We are not ALL about brutality here at GVN. We recognize that some of you might have young children who you want to keep entertained while ALSO learning something educational. Sesame Street has you covered with the release of Potty Time Plus! Getting Ready With Elmo. You will be thankful when your young one is able to take on the world without relying solely on you. Plus, the release features some special guests including Stephen and Ayesha Curry who stop by to help make some pancakes!
It is another notable week in the world of 4K UHD releases as Sony serves up two of the all-time great films from David Lean on 4K UHD Blu-Ray in a Limited Edition SteelBook. The Bridge On The River Kwai returns to 4K UHD featuring a new Dolby Vision presentation along with the original mono and all of the legacy special features. Lawrence of Arabia finally receives a standalone release on 4K UHD after previously being exclusive to the Columbia Classic: Volume One set. The amount of special features on this one will blow your mind, and it serves as one of the finest 4K UHD presentations on the market.
Shout! Factory and GKIDS are making anime fans extremely happy as they give three early works from Makoto Shinkai their proper recognition on Blu-Ray. Catch the Blu-Ray debut of The Place Promised In Our Early Days along with The Children Who Chase Lost Voices and 5 Centimeters Per Second, which includes the Blu-Ray debut of Voices Of A Distant Star. Get further thoughts on these title on The Video Attic below.
Warner Archive is celebrating the centennial of the one and only Judy Garland with a trio of Blu-Ray debuts including Ziegfeld Girl, For Me and My Gal and The Clock. The label is one of the absolute best in the business when it comes to film preservation, and these titles are some of the most dazzling we have seen all year.
This is only a taste of the incredibly packed lineup you have to look forward to you this week. Be sure to check out the full list below after checking out The Video Attic where we discuss the Blu-Ray release of RoboCop: The Series, the Shudder horror anthology series Slasher: Flesh and Blood, the animated crossover Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem In The Multiverse, new releases from Kino Lorber, Mondo Macabre and more.
