GVN Review: ‘Cobra Kai’ Continues to Do What It Does Best in Season Four and That’s Kick Ass

By this point, you’ve probably heard (and said) this same exact phrase, “Cobra Kai is better than it has any business being“. That’s still true even in season four. Prior to the fourth season coming out (and prior to Netflix announcing the show would get a fifth season), I was of the mindset that season four would probably be a good point to end this great series. I was wrong – this show still has so much story left to tell. And I can’t wait for it.

Slight Spoilers

Season three ended off with Daniel and Johnny teaming up to take down John Kreese, who decided to team up with someone as well. That person is Terry Silver. Karate Kid III may not have been the best film, but it had one twisted villain. Thomas Ian Griffith takes what he brought us in that third Karate Kid film and amplified it. At this point, I don’t think any of us thought there’d be anyone worse than Kreese and we were dead wrong.

As you can imagine, Daniel and Johnny teaming up have their growing pains. At times, I wanted to reach through the screen and tell both of them to stop being stubborn and work together. This 30+ year rivalry needs to end – for the sake of the tournament and the kids. It was interesting seeing kids like Sam, Miguel, and Hawk all find their places in this new Miyagi-Do/Eagle Fang team-up. And what each student learns may surprise you. Let me say that since season one, Eli/Hawk’s development has been my favorite to watch and that didn’t stop here. His redemption arc is on full display in season four.

Can Miguel Be Happy?

As much as I love Miguel, I have to say I didn’t really enjoy his relationship with Sam this season. This is just me, Sam has never been my favorite character. And although Tory has also had her insufferable moments on screen, she became far more enjoyable to watch [at times] than Sam. Towards the end of the season, it seemed Tory was getting her own redemption arc – something I still enjoyed more than anything Robby related. I’m sorry, I just don’t care. Frankly, my question to the writers is, why can’t Miguel be happy!? They certainly tugged at my heartstrings this season with several Miguel/Johnny scenes.

While I felt that the last two episodes fast-forwarded quickly, they’re also some of the most exciting episodes in the season. They’re full of twists and turns and it reminds you that this is not the same All Valley tournament we saw in season one. The characters have changed, the stakes are higher, and the kids are unfortunately playing for team members who have their own agendas. Specifically, Cobra Kai. What Terry Silver ends up doing will make you absolutely have to rewind and rewatch. And then, beg for season five to come out now.

Season four had some bumps, but overall it was a season that kept the excitement going. There were twists and turns that were both satisfying and shocking. There was character development that felt rewarding and it was a reminder that this is more than just a karate show. It’s a show about relationships, self-discovery, and so much more. Oh yea, and kickass karate.
