GVN Review: Paramount+’s ‘Star Trek Prodigy’ Episode 3, ‘Starstruck’

Last Time on Star Trek Prodigy

When we last left Paramount+’s Star Trek Prodigy, our young crew had taken their new ship away from their captivity, with the Diviner’s daughter Gwyn in tow. Their fearless leader Dal was trying to select their first destination when the ship’s Holo guide Captain Janeway appeared. Ready to assist them in their journey and train them in the ways of Starfleet and the Federation. The trick however, will be to get Dal to overcome his distrust and accept her assistance. Not to mention the problematic situation that taking the Diviner’s Daughter and the ship that he coveted will no doubt cause.

Overcoming Dal’s Trust Issues

But first, they must select their initial path. Holo-Janeway explains to the erstwhile crew some history of the Federation and Starfleet. While this sounds good to Rok-Tahk and to Jankom, Dal is resistant. Even to the idea of having Janeway choose their destination. To his way of thinking, and as his life has shown him, anyone offering something that appears to be too good to be true, it usually is. The Federation is just another name for someone trying to tell them what to do. True the ship they are on ONCE belonged to Starfleet, but it is their ship now. They should choose their own path. Even when it come to their first destination.

A Lot to Learn

While the rest of his crew was hesitant, especially since they had no idea of how to fly the ship, they relented. Dal chose a red dot on the map as his (their) first destination. Janeway warned him that there were dangers inherent where he had chosen to go, but he didn’t listen. It would be the first of many decisions in this episode where Dal might have listened to Janeway. The results would prove to be a test of Dal’s leadership and the crew’s ability to handle a dangerous situation. And we’re only in the 3rd episode. By the end, they will realize they have a lot to learn.

Thoughts

Star Struck gives the audience a chance to learn about the crew, but especially Dal. His life has ingrained in him a deep distrust of people. Not to mention a inherent self-centered personality where things generally revolve around him. It is why he tends to call the Protostar HIS ship and most good ideas, HIS ideas. This shouldn’t come as a big surprise since when you have grown up to be self-reliant, your opinion tends to be the only one that matters. Not the most attractive of personality flaws, but by the end of the episode, he appears to have learned at least something about accepting assistance when needed. The crew will appreciate him not getting them all killed by his reluctance to admit he doesn’t know everything.

The Rok-Tahk Fan Club

I said it in the first review and I repeat myself. Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk is just so damned cute. She can break your heart as she did when asking Qwyn why she didn’t help them. The only crime they had committed was allowing themselves to be caught by the Kazon and sold into manual labor at the mines. Or when she chose to eat the same gruel she ate at the mines, because it was all she had known. Awwww. But she also can be a force to be reconned with. It helps when your built like red brick wall.

So now that Dal is hopefully on board with taking advice from Janeway, they can keep moving in a safe manner. Which would be a good idea as the Diviner has launched his ship and is in hot pursuit. Will they be able to stay ahead of him and avoid capture? The answer to that will be revealed in the coming episodes. As for “Starstruck,” I give it a solid 4 out of 5 for character building and a drama filled escape.

Star Trek Prodigy can be seen on Paramount+ with new episodes released on Thursday.
