David Pepose
When I first read AfterShock’s Scouts Honor, I was quite impressed by writer David Pepose’s story and his work with artist Luca Casalanguida. Whenever I happen upon a talented creator, I always wonder: How they would handle a book from either of the “Big Two?” Well, starting on Wednesday May 18th, we will know about David Pepose as he and artist Carlos Magno bring their talents to bare on Marvel’s Savage Avengers #1.
Conan and Deathlok
This book combines some powerhouse character’s and two of my favorites. Conan the Barbarian, whom I followed religiously back in the days of Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith, and my absolute favorite, John Buscema. But if that is not enough, Pepose’s storyline also includes Deathlok. Perhaps not exactly the one I was familiar with back in the day. Created and drawn by Rich Buckler. However, artist Magno handles these characters in a style that pays homage to the look I love. That alone is enough to garner my approval.
Synopsis
In this new series, Deathlok is a time traveling cyborg, looking to erase those guilty of “crimes against the time stream.” Sounds kind of familiar doesn’t it? It’s meant to. In this case, his target was Conan the Cimmerian. Conan had ended up in present time and the dangers that entails. But through it all, he still found a cult of snake worshippers to eviscerate. A barbarian’s work is never done.
Conan and His Friends
However, unlike a mother and her son, Conan is not so easily taken down. Especially when he has some help. Such as in Daredevil, Anti-Venom, Black Knight, Weapon H, and Cloak and Dagger. Together they must somehow help Conan to defeat the seemingly indestructible killing machine. It brings about a dynamic and action packed battle that causes repercussions for the future…or the past. Time travel is so confusing.
Thoughts
This series sets up to be a energetic romp in the past and future. While the initial premise seems to be reflective of some familiar ground, there is much more to it than that. The collection of characters and the dynamic work of artist Carlos Magno along with colorist Espen Grundetjern and letterer Travis Lanham assure that the book far exceeds that. I look forward to seeing what Pepose has in store for the following books in the run. If past work is any indication, it will be a blast.
