In April, we completed our review of Dark Horse Comics’ White Savior, a four-part series that blended humor, satire, irreverence, and entertainment. White Savior, authored by Scott Burman and Eric Nguyen, explored the White Savior trope in a unique way, incorporating numerous puns and pop culture references throughout the narrative. It is undoubtedly a series that will feature on my “best of” list in the coming months.
But for those of you who missed it, Dark Horse Comics has recently released the TPB version of the series. Once more offering the opportunity to indulge in the series that we compared to the works of Mel Brooks and Monty Python. In White Savior, you can check out the exploits of Japanese-American teacher Todd Parker, his buddy Neal, and his frenemy Maggie as they accidentally traveled back to feudal Japan and found themselves trying to prevent a prophesized disaster from occurring. While trying to keep themselves alive in the process.
This sword-swing satire has it all–time travel, compromising situations, accidental homicide, mistaken identity, and, most importantly, laughs. Throughout the series, creators Burman and Nguyen were willing to swing for the proverbial fences when the opportunity presented itself for a humorous segue way. Along the way, no pop culture reference was left unscathed in their wake.
Dark Horse Comics White Savior TPB by is Scott Burman, Eric Nguyen, Iwan Joko Triyono, and Micah Myers is now available where great comics and books are sold.
