Halle Berry Drops Out Of Role of a Transgender Man After Internet Backlash

It felt like déjà vu. If you don’t remember, Scarlett Johansson had taken the role of a trans man in 2018 for the film Tub and Tug. After backlash, Johansson exited the part. Then, just a day ago, Halle Berry announced that she was planning on playing a trans man for an upcoming project. Had Berry not seen the heat that Johansson had gotten in 2018? And who is casting cisgender actors to play transgender people?

I digress. The reveal was during an Instagram live interview with Berry, who did mention she was preparing for the role:

“[It’s] a character where the woman is a trans character, so she’s a woman that transitioned into a man. She’s a character in a project I love that I might be doing.”

Berry also faced backlash due to misgendering the character during the interview:

“Who this woman was is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next project.”

Now, Berry has exited the role. She issued a statement:

“Over the weekend I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks. As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” she wrote. “I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days and will continue to listen, educate and learn from this mistake. I vow to be an ally in using my voice to promote better representation on-screen, both in front of and behind the camera.”

What do you think about Berry initially taking this role and her departure from the project?
