Halloween Movie Must-See: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

It’s October! You know what that means! Halloween every day! Oh, is that not on the calendar? Too bad. In this house, Halloween is a month-long celebration. For some, it’s a year long. For those, I say that you are the best. Seriously, I just adore Halloween season. There’s so many great movies to watch! Let’s highlight one that I feel is a must-watch during this spooky season. That is The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a musical horror comedy that was first released in 1975. It was produced by 20th Century Fox and was meant to be a parody of science fiction and B-rated horror films. It’s become a cult classic and is still shown in many theaters across New York City. Where participants will actually perform along with the musical numbers. It was also chosen to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2005.

I was in high school when I befriended someone who was absolutely obsessed with this film. After having expressed that I hadn’t ever seen the movie (but, knew about it as my aunt’s a huge fan), my friend sat me down immediately. And turned on The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I returned the favor when a few years ago Geek Vibes Nation/Top 10 contributor and Twitch Streamer Brittany Heigle-Rogers also told me she never saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

What makes The Rocky Horror Picture Show just so spectacular? The songs. So many classics. The Time Warp, Dammit Janet, Hot Patootie, and just so many more. The way the film embraces just how funky and trippy it is. And of course, the real allure is Tim Curry as the very charismatic pansexual transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter. When Susan Sarandon’s Janet Weiss and Barry Bostwick’s Brad Majors stumble across Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s wild mansion, they can’t even begin to comprehend what is in store from them.

There’s songs, sexual awakenings, and the “perfect man” that is being built. Fun fact: Peter Hinwood – who plays the “creation” Rocky – was only ever in three films. This being one of them. His final role was uncredited, in 1976’s Sebastiane.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is not meant to be taken seriously. I cannot tell you that it has any sort of message for real life. It’s just a fun and outrageous film that contains addicting songs. If this pandemic ever lifts, I’d love to go to one of the midnight showings. In the mean time, let’s all do the time warp in our living rooms!
