‘Hanna’ Season 3 Review: A Final Farewell

In the third and final season of the Amazon Prime series, Hanna (Esmé Creed-Miles) continues her covert crusade to dismantle Utrax. Not yet free from the clutches of the program, the titular trained assassin works alongside former CIA operative and foe-turned-ally Marissa Wiegler (Mireille Enos) and John Carmichael (Dermot Mulroney) to finally put an end to all the manipulation, brainwashing, and baby-abducting horror that is Utrax.

The first two seasons of the coming-of-age thriller delved heavily into the illusion of free will and the weaponization of societal expectations of young women. Season three continues to explore themes of femininity, the power of identity, and the concept of nature versus nurture. Hanna has certainly grown tremendously from the sheltered (albeit badass) character we were introduced to when the series first premiered. Watching as she stealthily collects information while casually chatting with a stranger, or the way she expertly maps out the logistics of any location in mere seconds is truly where Hanna (and the show as a whole) shines.

Now, in the series’ final episodes, Hanna and foe-turned ally Marissa (Mireille Enos) aim to thwart Utrax’s true endgame: to eliminate the Greta Thunberg’s of the world. The young dissidents and revolutionaries with the power to effect real change. With Hanna’s cover still intact, she returns to the Utrax program under the guise of a loyal trainee. Only this time, she nearly blows her entire mission when she becomes smitten with Parisian activist, and the main target of her, Abbas Naziri (Adam Bessa).

We’re also introduced to The Chairman (Ray Liotta) – a.k.a. the “mastermind” behind the whole assassin training program. And, much of the 6-episode season is dedicated to Marissa and Hanna’s quest to uncover The Chairman’s motives. The hunt for answers and fixation with the head honcho at the top of the Utrax pyramid mirrors the same formula we’ve seen from past seasons. Despite the familiar structure, it’s thrilling to watch the budding dynamic between Hanna and Marissa grow and develop. From outsmarting teams of agents hellbent on taking the duo down to their combat skills, their relationship truly takes center stage this season.

While Hanna’s fellow assassins Jules (Gianna Kiehl) and Sandy (Áine Rose Daly) are still in the mix, as they continue to grapple with the psychological repercussions of their predicament, their storyline takes a backseat this season. Especially when it comes to Liotta stepping into the role of the villainous authority figure.

The show’s visual appeal continues to be a delectable treat for viewers. Gripping confrontations, moments of pure physicality, and even Hanna’s silent moments (I’ll pass on ever going head-to-head on a mere staredown with her), are all elements fans will eat up in the shows send-off season. And while the paint-by-numbers structure of season three feels hastily thrown together, it’s still effective in its ability to entertain and bring the story to a close.
