Variety just announced that former One Direction frontman Harry Styles is in talks to play Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid, starring next to Halle Bailey who will play Ariel. He originally had his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s war movie Dunkirk. Styles is also joining Melissa McCarthy who will star as the villain Ursula. Rob Marshall will be directing the film.
Following the similar formula that other Disney live-action remakes have pursued, The Little Mermaid will plan on having the original songs from the beloved animated classic as well as new songs that will be composed by Alan Menken and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The live-action The Little Mermaid is hoping to start on production as soon as early 2020.
