‘Hawkeye’ Episode Three Review: Echo Makes Her MCU Debut With a Bang

If you weren’t told that this was Alaqua Cox’s debut acting role, you’d think she is a pro in the industry. However, Cox’s role as Echo in the Disney Plus series Hawkeye marks her first acting credit. Not only is she playing this character in the series, but it’s already been announced that Cox will reprise the character in a spin-off series centered around Echo.

Slight Spoilers

Yes, I was a naysayer of this Hawkeye series. If you watch any review on Geek Vibes Nation’s YouTube channel, I’m very vocal that the character of Clint Barton is not my favorite in the MCU. Meaning, I wasn’t overly excited for this series. However, the Netflix MCU street-level feel to this show, Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, and now Cox’s Maya Lopez/Echo have made this [so far] an absolute win for me. Seriously, I could keep raving about Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. Her humor, heart, and badassery solidifies that there’s no one else better suited for this character. And I’m so looking forward to Steinfeld’s future in the MCU.

Now, the Hawkeye series has introduced another badass female character in Echo. She’s awesome – first of all. Cox brings such a great multi-dimensional performance with this character. I just want to keep watching. I enjoy the inclusion of ASL with her character and watching the dynamic between Echo – someone’s who has embraced being deaf – and Clint – someone who is losing his hearing and not embracing it. The scene when Echo kicked Clint’s hearing aid out of his ear was both cool to watch and incredibly meaningful.

Rating: 4.5/5

Not only did I enjoy this episode (especially the car chase scene), but I loved what this episode means. Listen, I don’t want this to become like Mephisto in WandaVision – aka, us fans looking at hints when they’re all speculative. BUT – come on…that has to be Wilson Fisk, right? If you know, then you know.
