On October 6, Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery completed their agreement, putting an end to the doubts regarding their streaming future. Skydance will now be in control of the new venture. The companies intend to merge HBO Max and Paramount+ into one platform in the future. However, the exact details remain a little vague since there has been no announcement of a new name or a launch date. It is not clear whether one app will take in the other or whether both will merge in some way. Nevertheless, users can expect more sophisticated streaming options as this technology-oriented company is striving to innovate its services. The industry landscape will become something entirely new.
If you’ve tracked these mergers, you understand how things evolve gradually, with app updates sometimes stretching over months. The catalogs don’t match exactly. HBO Max remains the domain of Game of Thrones, the new DC series by Gunn and Safran, and the Harry Potter franchise launching on December 25 with a season dedicated to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. On the other hand, Paramount+ offers Taylor Sheridan’s series, CBS shows, The Agency starring Michael Fassbender, along with a wealth of classic films and reality programs appealing to a different crowd. That’s everything wrapped up.
Logging in once comes with consequences: rights grabs, profile migrations, and countless emails confirming old passwords still work. The leadership list, released a day before the merger, keeps Gunn and Safran at the helm of DC films. On the creative front, no immediate changes will occur. Earlier reports suggest HBO’s Casey Bloys will enhance the streaming profile when the companies unite. Still, both services will remain separate apps for now.
Nothing vanishes this month
Both platforms still selling subscriptions and releasing content. New episodes are coming soon. HBO Max will feature October releases, promoting “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and “Lanterns.” Further down the road, look out for “The Gilded Age” season 4. Over on Paramount+, there’s something for everyone: “Tulsa King” season 4, “Dexter: Resurrection” season 2, and the animated series “Avatar: Seven Heavens.” Films like “The Housemaid,” “Challengers,” and classics such as “When Harry Met Sally” are staying put on their current platforms. A press release won’t suddenly move them elsewhere.
If you subscribe to both services, your wallet’s not off the hook until further notice about a major switch comes through. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts excited about potential mergers hint at big changes ahead. Over time, this service is expected to climb higher in the subscriber rankings, inching closer to big players like Disney and Amazon rather than remaining among smaller apps. However, this progress hinges on maintaining subscribers during the app integration process. Morgan Stanley recently noted that there’s a 28 percent overlap between the two subscriber bases. This overlap is significant but still leaves many new titles for over half of the library’s audience.
Yet, no one has fully addressed an important issue.
Combining everything into one app could simplify things: a single bill and watchlist with Sheridan westerns right next to the latest DC series. But there are potential downsides too. It might make niche shows harder to find, increase prices, or add more ads. The tier, once lighter with more ads, has changed. Skydance hasn’t decided on its preferred route yet. The only definite news from the October 6 announcement is that the two services will merge into one. What’s uncertain is the icon’s branding, when this change will happen, and if those who only wanted one collection are being ignored. Previously, these catalogs were impressive. It’s not clear if they deserve a real upgrade now or if it’s just more of the same hassle in a bigger menu until there’s a complete app overhaul.
