Fans of the video game The Last of Us were thrilled when HBO made their intentions of an adaptation of the first game known. But as most fans know, certain liberties will almost always be taken when creating a show. The Last of Us will be no different.
Plans for The Last of Us
HBO Executive Producer for the adaptation and game director Neil Druckmann recently revealed his and co-Show Runner Craig Mazin’s plans for the adaptation with IGN. This was during SXSW 2021.
We talked at length [that season 1 of the show is going to be [the first game],” Druckmann explained, noting that for him and Mazin, “the philosophical underpinnings of the story” were the essential thing to get right about the adaptation. “As far as the superficial things, like should [a character] wear the same plaid shirt or the same red shirt? They might or might not appear in it, that’s way less important to us than getting the core of who these people are and the core of their journey.
What Change is Acceptable
For gaming fans, this news is par for the course. The amount of deviation might be the sticking point. But time will tell how that transpired and what the reactions will be.
