Exclusive discussions about a potential revival of the classic Nickelodeon animated series Hey Arnold! are underway at Paramount, according to writer and producer Joe Purdy.
Speaking at MultiCon 2026, Purdy confirmed the conversations are real. “Absolutely. Yes, yes, yes,” he said, noting the constantly shifting business landscape following Paramount’s acquisition by Skydance Media in August 2025. Despite the changes in decision-makers, he stressed that talks about bringing the show back are actively happening.
Series Background
Created by Craig Bartlett, Hey Arnold! followed fourth-grader Arnold Shortman and his friends as they navigated life in the fictional city of Hillwood. The series premiered on October 7, 1996, ran for five seasons and 100 episodes, and ended its original run on June 8, 2004. Fans finally received closure with the 2017 television movie Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie.
What a Revival Might Look Like
Purdy addressed the question of how much the characters would age. “Would they be much older? Probably not. I think a year or two older. They’re so beloved,” he explained. He ruled out an abrupt jump to high school, saying the team has many story ideas ready and would mainly update the world with some modern technology.
Creator Craig Bartlett expanded on possible themes. He pointed to the strong nostalgia for the 1990s and suggested continuing the gentrification storyline introduced in The Jungle Movie. Using Brooklyn as a real-world model, Bartlett said a revival could explore both the positive progress and what has been lost in Arnold’s neighborhood.
On technology, Bartlett noted that smartphones would almost certainly be present for every character. In the 2017 movie only Rhonda had a cell phone; today the entire group would carry them. He saw potential in stories about frayed attention spans caused by constant device use. At the same time, he emphasized keeping the show evergreen and avoiding overly topical or political content so the stories remain timeless.
Past Spin-Off Ideas
A previously pitched spin-off called The Patakis, focused on a teenage Helga and her family, resurfaced in recent years. Bartlett confirmed in 2023 that the old show-bible materials were genuine. The project had been aimed at a more mature audience on Nick at Nite or MTV around the year 2000 but never moved forward.
Why Fans Want It Back
The dedicated Hey Arnold! fanbase has long called for more stories. With original creative talent still enthusiastic and a clear vision for modest updates—slightly older characters, smartphones, evolving city life—the series appears well-positioned for a return that could satisfy longtime viewers while introducing new generations to its empathetic storytelling.
No official green light or release timeline has been announced, but the confirmation that formal talks are taking place marks the strongest public signal yet that Arnold and the gang could return to screens.
