Synopsis:
Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity.
Say what you want about the Fast & Furious franchise but a good movie is a good movie. Hobbs and Shaw is a good movie. The film, produced by its stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is a spinoff that’s part of the Fast & Furious universe. It’s an action-comedy with a dash of sci-fi and could have easily been an Apocolypse movie if they wanted it to be. While cars and racing aren’t a main focal point anymore, we still get fast, exotic, and custom vehicles that please the eyes as they are still tools used to achieve the goal. It’s beautiful action sequences are a result of being directed by stuntman and producer, David Leitch as well as cinematographer, Jonathan Sela. Leitch, who directed Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, and co-directed John Wick hit the nail on the head with this film as he did with the others.
Plot/Pace
When you watch an action movie what do you want? Action! Action is what you get from start to finish. With big fights, big muscles, and big laughs it will have you glued to the screen. The film rarely slows down and for good reason. It didn’t need to. However, I can’t help but wonder when the characters eat, you rarely see anyone eat in action films or when they would have time. Although, there is a hilarious diner scene with a surprise guest. Anyway, the movie is equal parts action and comedy both done fantastically. Don’t get me wrong there are some over the top sequences but what movie in this universe doesn’t. I mean, we can all hold helicopters with a chain right? The plot is simple but simplicity is best sometimes. I feel the simplicity allows them to be more creative with the action sequences. Also, it allows them to not have to do much backtracking. It’s straight forward, pedal to the metal. There aren’t any twists and turns, they simply have to stop the villain. Leading to a showdown in Hobbs’ home island. Previously, I mentioned sci-fi and there are definitely some bio-hacking, Terminator vibes going on. It’s a fun additive to the plot. The cards are stacked and the stakes are high but I’ll leave it at that. There are a few surprise actors and some callbacks that left a smile on my face.
Characters/Acting
The chemistry in this film is amazing. Johnson (Hobbs) and Statham (Shaw) are a perfect comedic duo. They are gold together. Adding in the physicality they both bring, it makes for a fun time at the theater. Both characters are stubborn but have to put aside their differences because they share common goals, saving their families and the world. Vanessa Kirby ( Hattie) is a fantastic addition to the roster. Who doesn’t like seeing a smart, kickass, beautiful woman stealing scenes? Her back and forth with Johnson’s character and her past with Statham’s makes for a great trio. Lastly, what’s an action film without a bad guy, enter Idris Elba. Elba plays a revenge hungry Brixton that only has two things on his mind, death and evolution. Referring to himself as Black Superman, minus the flying, he is indeed a formidable foe for Hobbs and Shaw.
Hobbs and Shaw rated PG-13 releases in theaters on August 2nd, make sure you check it out.
