How to Prepare for New York Comic-Con 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”7492″ img_size=”700×360″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]We are very close to this year’s New York Comic-Con. For those who drooled over SDCC, but were unable to attend due to living on the opposite side of the country, fret not. Those who live in the New York metropolitan have NYCC.

New York Comic-Con has gone through some changes in the past few years. We have the 7 subway that lets us off only a few blocks away from the Jacob Javits Center, we have fan verification now to make ticket purchasing less stressful (still kind of stressful), and the convention has gotten so big that it’s extended to Madison Square Garden, where it features panels that can’t fit in the home base.

While you’re saving up money for all the swag you’re going to buy that you could buy online for half the price and working on your cosplay, there are a few things you should keep in mind when preparing for your NYCC excursion. Remember, this is New York City and everything is better in the Big Apple.

Make Sure You Have Your Badge

Your badge is your gateway into NYCC. Without this piece of plastic that will most likely feature The Walking Dead on it, you can’t get in. Make sure once you get your badge in the mail, you activate it, and I suggested immediately putting it in the bag you plan on taking to NYCC. Either that or put in on some lanyard and hanging it near your keys, so you don’t forget.

Make Sure Your Cosplay is Compliant

NYCC changed the rules a few years ago on what was acceptable material to use for your cosplay, particularly the weapons. I know that it shook some cosplayers up, who had spent months and loads of money on perfecting their tools. So, make sure you read up on the rules so nothing is confiscated at the door and your outfit can be well accessorized for photos.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

NYCC is a lot of fun, but also exhausting. Existing within the massive Jacob Javits Center, this convention gets packed. There’s a lot to see and a lot of walking. I know that comfy shoes may not always go with your outfit, but you may want to think of an alternative to high heel boots. Also, make sure you rest up. Plenty of people end up sitting against the walls at the convention and there’s nothing weird about that. It’s good to give yourself a break, especially if you plan on being there all day and if you’re going multiple days.

Bring a Sandwich

I’m not kidding. Or a snack. Listen, it’s so tempting to want to go down to the cafeteria while your stomach is growling and buy some of the food there. Chinese food, Greek gyros, and pizza, who wouldn’t want to splurge? But, the cafeteria is unnecessarily expensive and the food is nothing to brag about. You’re better off making a peanut butter sandwich and bringing some snacks so you can same money for that swag we spoke about earlier.

Bring Phone and Camera Chargers

There are plenty of outlets at NYCC. You’ll probably be taking a lot of pictures and the last thing you want happening before trying to snap a pic with someone wearing awesome cosplay, is for your phone to die. Make sure everything is charged beforehand, but bring chargers just in case. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Cosplay is Not Consent

Let’s get real here. A lot of cosplayers, particularly women; wear fantastic costumes. These costumes sometimes show skin. And these ladies look awesome. Just because a woman is wearing an outfit that’s bringing your favorite female character to life does not mean you can unnecessarily touch them. It is crowded in NYCC, but that does not give you permission to grope any areas of a woman while passing by. The same thing goes for the men. I’ve seen plenty of male cosplayers shirtless and even wearing speedos, this still does not give you the right to touch them. If you want a picture that’s fine, but also do not jump out just throwing your arms around them, without asking first. Remember, cosplay is NOT consent.

New York Comic-Con this year is October 3rd to October 6th this year. I, and plenty of the Geek Vibes Nation crew; will be there! The most important thing is to have fun!
