Learn how to survive longer in Rust with our essential guide for beginners facing tough challenges on day one.

Rust has been around for more than a decade, and it still has one of the steepest learning curves in PC gaming. You spawn on a beach with a rock and a torch, every other player on the server is a potential threat, and once a month the map is wiped and everyone starts again. Facepunch keeps the game moving with monthly updates. October’s Livestock update added cows and sheep you can raise and breed, a Biofuel Generator and new loot rooms tied to the Power Plant, and Facepunch’s Halloween update, a mandatory patch that switches on the seasonal content, went live on October 22. If you are starting fresh, this guide covers what to do in your first wipe and how to avoid losing everything on day one.

    Understand the wipe cycle first

Every Rust server, official or community, is force-wiped on the first Thursday of the month, usually around 2 p.m. ET, when Facepunch releases its monthly update. The next one falls on November 5. A forced wipe resets the map and every base on it, and many servers also wipe blueprints. Community servers often wipe more often than that, weekly or every two weeks, so check the server description before you join.

This matters for planning. Joining on wipe day means everyone is equal and the map is crowded. Joining a week later means fewer players but established clans with guns and stone walls. Most beginners have a better time on a fresh wipe of a low-population or “noob-friendly” community server.

    Your first hour

    Gather, craft, hide

Use your rock to collect wood and stone, then craft a stone hatchet and pickaxe as soon as you can. Pick up hemp along the way for cloth, which you will need for a sleeping bag. Avoid the beach, where most fresh spawns gather, and head inland toward a quiet area near resources and fresh water.

    Build a small base fast

A simple 2×1 base with a door, a lock and a Tool Cupboard is enough for the first night. The Tool Cupboard stops other players from building around you and lets you upgrade walls. Upgrade from twig to wood immediately, and to stone as soon as you can afford it. A small, well-locked base is far safer than a big, half-finished one.

    Place a sleeping bag

A sleeping bag inside your base lets you respawn there instead of on the beach. Keep a second bag hidden somewhere else on the map in case your main base is raided.

    Days one to three

    Get to a workbench

Your first big goal is a Tier 1 Workbench, which costs 50 scrap and unlocks better crafting. Collect scrap from barrels along roads and from monument crates, then use it at the Research Table or the workbench’s Tech Tree to learn blueprints. Scrap is Rust’s real currency, so do not waste it. Once you have around 500 scrap, a Tier 2 Workbench opens up far stronger weapons and armor.

Use the new farming and livestock systems

The October update makes farming more worthwhile. Raising animals gives you a steady supply of milk, wool, meat and leather, and their dung makes good fertilizer for crops. The new Biofuel Generator turns food, including spoiled meat and surplus crops, into Low Grade Fuel, although it needs to be stirred by hand. For solo players and small groups, a quiet farm is a safer way to build up resources than constant fighting.

Learn the map and the new Power Plant rooms

Monuments hold the best loot, but they are also where experienced players camp. The Livestock update ties several of them to the Power Plant. Heavy Fuses found there switch on the power grid in phases, and each phase unlocks new loot rooms elsewhere on the map. Phase one needs a single fuse and powers rooms at the Harbors, Ferry Terminal and Junkyard. Phase two needs four fuses and covers Water Treatment, the Airfield, the Train Yard, Radtown and the Sewer Branch. Phase three needs ten fuses and opens rooms at Military Tunnels, the Missile Silo and Launch Site. On low-population servers, fuses last four times longer, which gives smaller groups a fair shot. Learn the safe routes and quieter monuments before you try the big ones.

A few other tricks help newer players. The Air Wolf helipad has to be repaired at the start of each wipe before you can buy a helicopter there, and sandbags now stack, so you can build simple pillboxes to defend a farm or a monument entrance.

    Staying alive against other players

PvP is where most new players struggle. A few habits make a big difference. Do not carry everything you own; leave spare resources in your base. Use headphones, because footsteps and gunshots tell you where danger is. Avoid fights you do not need to take, and log out inside your base, never in the open, because your sleeping body stays in the world after you leave.

    Raids and offline raids

Expect to be raided at some point, especially if you play solo. Many raids are “offline raids”, carried out while the owners are logged off and cannot defend. Honeycomb your walls (add extra layers around your loot room), split your loot across several boxes, and do not build next to a large clan. Losing a base is part of Rust, and the next wipe is always a fresh start.

Cheaters and choosing the right server

Like any competitive PC game, Rust has a cheating problem, and new players often notice it when they are killed through a wall or from an impossible distance. Some players respond by looking into Rust cheats themselves, but they should understand the stakes first: Rust uses Easy Anti-Cheat on official servers, and Facepunch says EAC bans are permanent unless overturned on appeal, while using a second account to get around one counts as ban evasion.

The most practical defense for a beginner is server choice. Community servers with active admins, clear rules and their own reporting tools tend to have fewer problems than empty or unmoderated ones. Report suspicious players in-game, record clips if you can, and move on rather than letting one bad wipe end your interest in the game.

Final tips for your first wipe

Start on a fresh wipe of a well-moderated server, build small and lock everything, and push for a Tier 2 Workbench as soon as your scrap allows. Use the new farming systems to build resources safely, and keep an eye on the Power Plant fuse phases to know which monuments are worth visiting. Above all, treat your first few wipes as practice. Rust rewards knowledge more than anything else, and every wipe teaches you something that makes the next one easier.
