Ian McDiarmid Predicted His Return As Palpatine Back in 2017

When you’re the Emperor in the Star Wars Universe, or at least you used to be before some asthmatic guy in a black helmet tossed you into the abyss, you apparently retain your powers of clairvoyance. That appeared to be the case with Star Wars’ Ian McDiarmid, who was revealed Friday to have reprised his role as Emperor Palpatine in saga finale Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. As it turns out, McDiarmid maybe predicted his return to the franchise in a September 2017 interview with BBC Scotland. This came when he was asked if he thought he would ever get the chance to play the Emperor again.

I suppose there must be a chance but I think you’d find out about it more quickly than I would. As far as the new films are concerned, I’m dead. There is no question about that. But there is what they call the anthology series and actually the most recent one, Rogue One, was about the time when I was in charge. I was referred to a few times, Darth Vader popped up, but you did not see me. Maybe they are keeping me as a surprise for later but I have no idea. Of course, I don’t want anyone else to play him.

Well as as we found out yesterday, no worries there as McDiarmid proved his powers of precognition and will once again be the Emperor we all know and love.
