For some reason, I am fascinated by oddities in film history. Not too long ago, I wrote an article about the old “film” that supposedly had people running from the movie theater. Today, I’d like to talk about the movie that is set to come out in 2115. 100 Years aka “The Movie You’ll Never See” is an upcoming “film” that stars John Malkovich and is directed by Robert Rodriguez. According to reports, 100 Years will come out on November 18th, 2115.
Top Secret
So, none of us will be around when that comes out. Hollywood is apparently so serious about keeping this film under-wraps that they are keeping it in a “high-tech” safe, behind bulletproof glass. This glass will not open until November 18, 2115. A thousand guests, which include Malkovich and Rodriguez; have been been given invitation tickets, which are made out of metal, as if they’ve received tickets to the Chocolate Factory. Since no one now will be alive then, the recipients of said metal invites will be able to pass theirs down to their descendants.
This is such a whacky film myth. Even whackier is that the whole concept behind the film is that it was made for a campaign for Louis XIII Cognac, which takes 100 years to age. Add the fact that there’s a song, composed by Pharrell Williams; called 100 Years [as well] set to be released in 2117. What is the point of this campaign? To serve as an odd time capsule that I’m sure people in 2115/2117 will scoff at? Where’s the financial gain here?
Is It Even a Movie?
Not to mention that the movie seems to not really be a movie, but more so a short film/commercial – according to Rodriguez via 2019:
“I was making several short films for them, and I finished that one first, we shot that one first, I thought that was gonna be a commercial or something. And then I showed them the movie and they said ‘Yeah, that’s great, that’s great. That’s the one we lock away.’ And I said ‘What? That’s the one you lock away? What about the other one with the future–‘ ‘No, that’s the commercial.’ […] The one that I was most attached to was the one they locked away.”
There’s no real details for the film, but a few teasers were released. One which you can watch here and you can see that it feels more like a commercial for a product rather than a trailer for a movie:
So, I guess this film does exist? But, in the end, who really cares? None of us will be around to see it and considering even Rodriguez thought that the film would be used for a commercial means it probably won’t be some huge theatrical event 100 years from now. At that point, will anyone even care that it’s 100 years old? Will movies even exist then?
So Whacky I Hope It’s True
Either way, it is something I am partially interested in. Just because it is so odd. Ever since I did find out about this concept, I can’t help, but wonder why? Hopefully, our descendants will appreciate a look into the past and what people 100 years ago thought the world would look like in 100 years. It’s kind of looking back at the World’s Fair and seeing what they thought the world would look like in the year 2000.
Anyway, have you heard of the Movie You’ll Never See?
