Jake Gyllenhaal Talks About Finally Entering the Superhero Genre

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”13676″ img_size=”800×450″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]For many, Jake Gyllenhaal has been considered one of the most talented actors of our time and whenever he’s been added to a film or project, you know he’s going to bring his A-game. Which, is why it was so damn delightful to have him make the jump into superhero movies with Spider-Man: Far From Home. The recent trailer’s debut featured our first look at Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio, who typically is a villain in the comic books, but has been presented as one of the good guys for the sake of the film. When and if his true nature will show up on screen we have no idea, but there’s no doubt that the hype is larger now than ever for Gyllenhaal’s casting in the MCU.

Gyllenhaal was almost cast as Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2, but as really stayed away from the superhero genre. In a sit down with Stephen Colbert, the actor spoke about the role of Mysterio, taking the jump into superhero movies, and why now:

“I would’ve [always] loved to, and this was the shot.”

Gyllenhaal then went on to expand on his enjoyment in working on Far From Home:

“It is. Yeah, people tend to consider me… I guess the movies I make are a little weird. Sometimes,” He said. “[But] it is different and it’s really fun. It was really fun. I was looking for a role in a space like that that felt I could do something with it, and I did something with it. I don’t know how good I did with it, but I something with it, and it’s very exciting!”

Gyllenhaal then touched upon how the experience of filming Far From home was different than what he originally expected:

“There is, sort of. But it actually feels like a smaller sized movie when you’re acting with the actors. [The actors] in the movie are great, there’s a great cast in this movie, and actually the director Jon Watts is fantastic and he really makes a space where you can try things out and play around and it doesn’t feel like you’re just sort of automaton, doing whatever.”

For those of us who are familiar with Gyllenhaal’s work, this role is a happy moment for fans and for those not familiar with his past movies, you have homework to do!

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 5th!
