When Avengers Endgame surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar for the box office number one spot, Cameron was one of the first to congratulate Disney and the Russo Bros. Whether this was heartfelt or not was up for contention but he took the high road. This doesn’t mean that the Director doesn’t want that record back. He stated as much when recently talked about the upcoming sequel.
I think it’s a certainty. But let’s give ‘Endgame’ their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater. I was really concerned with all the new streaming services and the different ways people can consume movies right now that the theatergoing experience might have been eroded to the point that a new ‘Avatar’ film – even if it were better than the first one, and better received – could never achieve the same box-office levels. Now at least we know such a thing is still possible at the movie theater. This gives me heart to go forward.
I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road (by offering congratulations),” Cameron said. “But they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.
That doesn’t sound like a man who has admitted defeat. In fact, he is apparently ready to regain Avatar’s crown and believes End Games’ success proves its possible to do it. Time will tell but either way, Disney comes out on top.
Do you feel that Avatar 2 will retake the box office thrown? How important do you feel it is Cameron for that to happen? Share your thoughts with us at GeekVibesNation.
