In what will be her third collaboration with STX Films, Jennifer Lopez is set to play the Cocaine Godmother, Griselda Blanco. The film titled, The Godmother will follow the life and death of the notorious Colombian drug lord. According to EW, Lopez will not only star in the film but will possibly make her directorial debut. There’s no clear sign just yet as to when the film will be released. In the meantime, Lopez is awaiting the release of her upcoming film Hustlers which drops in September. Additionally, Lopez along with her producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas will produce alongside Benny Medina. Furthermore, the script has been written by Terrance Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Regina Corrado. The film also got the blessing of Blanco’s son, Michael Corleone Blanco via Instagram. He says,

So happy to hear this is going to happen finally!!, @jlo is una patrona it’s only right she plays my mother the late great ,GRISELDA, la meramera !!!

It only makes sense to involve him but that’s just my opinion.

Griselda Blanco Restrepo, also known as La Madrina (black widow) was a ruthless drug lord. Playing a monumental part of the Medellin Cartel, Blanco distributed cocaine in New York and Miami as well as California. Responsible for murders estimated to exceed two hundred, she even had some of her husbands assassinated. She is part of every story you’ve watched or read about Pablo Escobar or the Cocaine Cowboys. However, she was active on into the early 2000s, running the organization from prison. In 2012, years after being released from prison, she was murdered at the age of 69 while being worth $2 billion. Being part of the Miami Drug War in the 70s and 80s, this should make for an interesting film. What are your thoughts? Do you enjoy gangster movies? Let us know in the comments.
