Jensen Ackles played one of the leads on The CW’s Supernatural for 15 seasons. After playing demon-killing Dean Winchester, Ackles’ next series will be The Boys. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, Ackles was cast as Soldier Boy in the third season of Amazon’s The Boys. Might I add, he announced the casting in an epic way:
Jensen Ackles and Eric Kripke Reunite
What’s super interesting about this casting is that The Boys showrunner is Eric Kripke. Kripke is also the creator of Supernatural, so he and Ackles worked together for a number of years during the early seasons. So, it’s cool to see the two reunite. This is gonna be good.
Why is The Boys a good home for Ackles after 15 seasons of Supernatural? Not only is The Boys not bogged down by the low budget of The CW, but The Boys is an adult show where Ackles can freely curse and stretch his limbs. Rather than having to be the stiff Dean (no offense – love Dean), Ackles can have a lot of fun with Soldier Boy. After all, this is a character being described as someone worse than Homelander.
He’s Going to Have Fun With This
This is going to be a role that is a lot of fun for Ackles. After playing the same character for almost as long as Mariska Hargitay has played Olivia Benson, you would think that he’d be itching to play someone else. Let me put the disclaimer, by the way, I love Hargitay as Olivia Benson in Law and Order: SVU.
Playing Someone New
While Dean Winchester himself went through some growth during Supernatural, Ackles also played what was called “demon Dean” in the tenth season. It was a lot of fun and it was nice to see Ackles being able to let loose a little. I think it showed us that Ackles can play a bad guy and be great at doing it.
Basically, I’m super excited for Ackles to play Soldier Boy in The Boys season three. I’m hoping this isn’t a one-season character and we can see Ackles be just as known as Soldier Boy as he was as Dean Winchester.
