Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos On Their Relationship in ‘Hanna’: “This is Not a ‘The Killing’ Reunion”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”16886″ img_size=”640×320″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]If you’re looking at Amazon’s upcoming show, Hanna, you’ll notice the two stars of this series are very familiar. In fact, Joel Kinnaman and Mireille Enos were once partners on AMC’s The Killing and they’re now reunited on the new show, but don’t expect this to be another installment of Linden and holder’s adventures. Rather than playing partners, both are on opposite sides of the spectrum – with Kinnaman portraying Erik, who is protecting his daughter Hanna from Enos’s Marissa, a CIA operative looking to kill the young girl.

Both Kinnaman and Enos were asked separately about their roles and the two’s former work on The Killing. Kinnaman stated:

“I think some people are gonna be a little disappointed, you know, because I know that there are a lot of people that really loved our relationship on The Killing and are very excited to see us play again,” Kinnaman told a small group of press. “I think there’s going to be an automatic longing to sort of see a similar kind of dynamic but there’s not going to be any of that. It’s very different.”

Enos then spoke:

“There’s no crossover, there’s none,” she said, plainly and simply. “There, we were partners with, like, a completely non-kind of romantic relationship. So we had each other’s back and we were not interested in making out. And here, we are enemies with, potentially, a history. So it’s like the polar opposite which has been fun!”

While the two had fantastic chemistry as Linden and Holder, Enos expressed how refreshing it was to portray enemies:

“I wondered going in, what’s it going to be like to play this different dynamic with him because there are scenes where we end up talking about the past and stuff,” Enos revealed. “It was so fun. It’s just like a dance.”

Kinnaman echoed this sentiment:

“The big thing is, you know, we’re really good dance partners and I think it was on Enos’ first real day, we had big, big chunky scenes and it was the first day with a new director. So we’re all, you know, trying out new stuff. But, I mean, it felt so free! […] Even though we were playing different characters, it’s just … she’s just so good. And it was so easy to improvise and just go a little left or right. You know, we’re like dance partners who are very used to each other.”

You can go to Collider for the full interview, which discusses the preparation routines for both actors, which included Enos becoming emotionally prepared for such an “evil” role, while Kinnaman trained rigorously for his very physical fight scenes that you can expect in the show. We got a little bit of that in the first episode, which was shown on Amazon Prime right after the Superbowl. All eight episodes will hit Prime on March 29th and in the meantime, you can catch The Killing on Hulu and read my review for the first episode of Hanna.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
