The Ballad of Richard Jewell will tell the real-life story of a security guard who discovered a pipe bomb in 1996 during the Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA. He saved a lot of lives due to this discovery, but was later accused of planting the bomb. Jewell was exonerated after an FBI investigation proved him innocent, but his reputation had already been destroyed.

Vanity Fair published an article in 1997 called American Nightmare: The Ballad of Richard Jewel. Originally, it was picked up by 20th Century Fox. Jonah Hill and Leonardo DiCaprio were meant to star in the movie. Eastwood was brought on as the director in April. Sam Rockwell will play Jewel’s attorney. And Jewell will be played by Paul Walter Hauser, who appeared in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman.
