Josh Boone Explains Why ‘NEW MUTANTS’ Cannot Go Directly To Streaming

For as long as the Fox Film New Mutants has been delayed, many fans have thought that a straight to streaming option could be open. Apparently however, there are contractual concerns that prevent that from being possible. That was verified when Director Josh Boone confirmed that some pictures, like New Mutants, signed contracts that made theatrical release a necessity. This would need to be fulfilled  before any ideas of streaming could be realized. He confirmed this while talking to Collider.

With most movies, you sign contracts that guarantee a theatrical release, so it needs to open to ever go digital in the first place. We just, too, would like to see people to see it in the theater. But it needs to obviously be at the right time when it’s safe to go back.

In addition, HBO had a deal with Fox that predated the Disney/Fox sale that requires any Fox film to be shown exclusively on HBO. So even if the film could be shown via streaming, it would have to go to HBOMax before it ever saw Disney+. Regardless, it appears that until theaters are safe to return to, New Mutants will remain on the bench, although it is still scheduled at this time to premier on August 28th.
