‘Jungle Cruise’ Review – An Hilarious and Thrilling Adventure That Is Sure To Dazzle Who Take The Trip

Synopsis:

Join fan favorites Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt for the adventure of a lifetime on Disney’s “Jungle Cruise,” a rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank and their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.

Would you sacrifice for your fellow man? Whether it be your reputation, time, money, or your life, could you sacrifice for a greater good? Depending on the scenario, it can be a scary concept. But if you are able to put yourself in someone else shoes, I’m sure you can find it in your heart to at least consider it. Honest consideration is important because it at least shows that you were able to feel and understand the circumstances of others. And thinking about and understanding others is pivotal to a successful and cohesive society.

“You are like an onion of deceit.”

The boat ride has a price but the dad jokes are free in Disney’s newest escapade, Jungle Cruise. The film is a hilarious and thrilling adventure that is sure to dazzle all who take the trip. There’s no controlling this cruise. Sitting at the intersection of Pirates of the Caribbean and Jumanji, Jungle Cruise is filled with plenty of action, comedy, and a fun story to keep you entertained. Set in 1916, the era adds a layer of humor and adversity that also feels reminiscent of Indiana Jones. With themes of trust, sacrifice, and ambition, you quickly latch on its characters and never let go. It also features a touching acceptance of a character that feels forgotten. There’s a lingering sense of discovery of not only places but people that is prevalent throughout. The story unfolds in a very pleasing way with a few unexpected and supernatural twists that I didn’t see coming. When witnessing a treacherous journey, you expect some extreme and intense moments, and with Dwayne Johnson involved, it does not disappoint.

The film isn’t overly complicated and can be enjoyed by the whole family. But the innuendo is for the adults. The characters are more than they seem, danger lurks around every corner, and with multiple menacing threats, humanity is in peril as well. The production design is fantastic, the score is lively and exudes adventure, the costumes are great, and Johnson paired with Emily Blunt is a duo that I didn’t know I needed. The story bookends very nicely and with its ending, I can easily see this turning into multiple films. I had a great deal of fun with Jungle Cruise and I know you will too. Its rewatchability is high.

Pacing & Pop

The pacing of this film is pretty solid for the majority of its runtime. However, it does begin to feel a bit sluggish and tedious in the second act. What really popped for me what the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. We all love the chemistry that Johnson has with Kevin Hart as well as Jason Statham, well now, he can now add Blunt to that list of great pairings.

Characters & Chemistry

Without a shadow of a doubt, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are the standouts. Their chemistry as Fank and Lily, respectively is what really makes this film work. Their comedic timing is on point and their heartfelt moments felt very organic. Jesse Plemons also makes his presence known. Plemons always seems to shine in every role. Jack Whitehall as Macgregor is a character that has a fun transformation and plenty of memorable moments.

Jungle Cruise releases in theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access (Additional Fee Required) on July 30, 2021. Stay safe and enjoy.
