Kevin Smith Promises a Darker Side to Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”10761″ img_size=”900×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]It’s not an over-exaggeration to say that many were a bit skeptical when Jon Cryer was cast as the infamous Superman villain Lex Luthor for The CW’s Supergirl. From Pretty in Pink, Dharma and Greg, and Two and a Half Men to various other comedic roles, Cryer is probably not the first pick most would have to play Lex. Although, here’s a little trivia for everyone, the actor played Lenny Luthor in 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

Well-known director Kevin Smith promises fans that we will see a “dark” Lex Luthor in Supergirl, though; claiming to have known about the casting long before the public did:

“I knew that a long time ago. When I was working on my episode, they were talking about who would play Lex Luthor and his name as at the top of the list at that point and I know what they’re doing with the character. Like, it’s not humorous. It’s a dark turn.” – Smith revealed in an interview.

Supergirl has been going in a much darker direction than previous seasons with the hateful alien rhetoric rippling through this season’s plotline. That on top of Lena Luthor’s experiments, we are hopefully seeing a darker aura to welcome Cryer’s Lex Luthor in. Even though I too was a bit skeptical, I was also skeptical about Heath Ledger’s Joker and Anne Hathway’s Catwoman when casting was first announced due to both’s previous more light-hearted work. I think we can all agree that these two performances were nothing compared to what we had seen in their past work, so let’s give Cryer a chance and he may just surprise all of us.
